Non-sectarian Buddhist retreat center in southwest Washington forest
Cloud Mountain Retreat Center occupies fifteen beautiful, forested acres approximately 125 miles south of Seattle and 60 miles north of Portland, deep in the forests of southwest Washington. The property is dotted with ponds and a creek, and serves as a wildlife refuge shared with black-tailed deer, songbirds, great blue herons, owls, ducks, raccoons, koi, newts, salamanders, and occasional river otters, cougars, and black bears. A complex of buildings—including Diamond Hall, Alder Lodge, Yogi Hall, and the Bamboo Room—winds through the forest along rock-lined gravel paths, with single sleeping rooms and some doubles available upon request, along with shared and private toilet and shower facilities.
The center's purpose is to provide opportunities for all individuals to hear and practice Buddhist teachings with qualified and realized teachers in an environment that combines simplicity, integrity, kindness, and direct contact with the beauty and energies of the natural world in support of spiritual deepening and realization. Cloud Mountain maintains a deliberately intimate scale: the maximum group size is 44 retreatants, usually led by one or two teachers. This intentional limitation ensures that no participant feels like "just another face in the crowd," and allows for both group and one-on-one practice discussions with teachers.
The bulk of the retreat schedule is grounded in Theravadin teachings, which emphasize insight (vipassana) and mindfulness. However, the center also honors and values the teachings central to Mahayana and Vajrayana schools, particularly the teachings on emptiness and the cultivation of bodhicitta—the aspiration to work in service of the awakening of all beings. Cloud Mountain's highest aspiration as a Dharma center is to support awakening, the deepest promise of the teachings of the Buddha. The center provides a foundation for the balanced cultivation of the Three Pillars of Buddhism: ethical and moral behavior (Śīla), generosity and giving (Dāna), and the cultivation of wisdom (Bhāvanā).
Retreats are conducted primarily in silence, known as Noble Silence, offering a rare opportunity to simplify daily routine, quiet the mind, and cultivate inward focus. The Five Precepts are observed by all retreatants, staff, and teachers as the foundation of behavior. Retreats typically include periods of sitting and walking meditation, daily meals, and Dharma instruction, allowing participants to explore the roots of suffering and cultivate depths of peace, compassion, and wisdom. The center operates year-round, with retreats ranging from three-night intensive programs to longer residential experiences.
